6-15 hours of one to one portrait therapy

Unique oil paintings of yourself or relative

Portrait Therapy is helpful for people who experience certain types of trauma (life threatening and chronic illness, bereavement, relationship breakdown, combat stress, PTSD, depression) as a disruption to their sense of self-identity.

Dr Susan Carr is a fully trained art therapist with 12 years experience working in palliative care; she has a current Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate; has been a member of the Health Professions Council since 2005; a member of the British Association of Art Therapists since 2003; and has professional indemnity insurance through Howden insurance. Susan qualified with an MA in Art Therapy from the University of Hertfordshire in 2005 and a PhD in Portrait Therapy from Loughborough University in 2015. Susan is also an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Art Therapy.

Do you find yourself saying “I don’t know who I am anymore!” or “I’m not the person I used to be!”, do you look in the mirror and say “Who’s that?!” If you answered “yes” to any of these questions you may be experiencing a disruption to your sense of self-identity (this is a bit like trying to navigate your life/world without a compass, or sat nav.). Portrait therapy may help you resolve self-identity disruption, reconnecting you with who you were, are and can be.

Susan’s approach to portrait therapy is broadly existential and person-centred, however Susan draws from a range of therapeutic approaches to suit each client. Susan believes in the empowerment of the individual, and through a process of collaborative learning, the aim is to learn how to heal one’s self.
